About the village

Finca Orbán is situated on a so-called 'teso', which is a Galician term used for a foothill, generally considered rather useless for agricultural purposes. Traditionally, rye was grown here as it is a cereal that will grow on the worst soils, low in fertility.

As the continuous cultivation of rye has eroded and depleted the soil of the village of Orbán over the past hundreds of years, it was eventually abandoned in the 1970's. Its fields used several times a year for the grazing of cows from neighboring farms.

The property was bought in 2019 by a Dutchman, destined to restore it to its full potential using permaculture and agroecology principles and methods. While the first years involved clearing the neglect of the decades before, Orbán is gradually being developed into a showcase of a successful application of regenerative agriculture principles.
